ABOUT UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowships and Visiting Scholars

For students from Tokyo, the United Nations University offers Ph.D. Fellowships in Economics Research. There are numerous scholarships available, and the total payout is $30,000.

Applicants must be Ph.D. holders in any of the university’s academic fields in order to be considered. The scholarship is available online, and candidates must be doctoral students in order to be eligible.

For doctoral students who are registered, the World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) offers a visiting Ph.D. fellowship program.

The program enables fellows to collaborate with UNU-WIDER academics on projects of shared interest, as well as to use resources and facilities for their Ph.D. dissertation or thesis research on emerging economies.

Fellows prepare one or more research articles and present a seminar on their results over the course of the program, which normally lasts for three consecutive months. Additionally, fellows could be able to publish their work in the UNU-WIDER Working Paper Series.

UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowships

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Registered doctorate students may use UNU-resources WIDER’s and facilities for their dissertation or thesis research on developing economies, as well as to collaborate with UNU-WIDER academics on projects of mutual interest through the Visiting Ph.D. Fellowship Program.

Before departing for their home institution, visiting Ph.D. fellows often stay at UNU-WIDER for three consecutive months. The program plans to be in-person in 2022, but depending on the COVID-19 pandemic situation, it may switch to an online or hybrid format.

Fellows prepare one or more research articles throughout the program and present a seminar on their results. Additionally, they could be able to publish their work in the UNU-WIDER Working Paper Series.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

You must complete an application form to apply for this program. You will be asked to upload your curriculum vitae as your application. Your Ph.D. supervisor will also need to provide UNU-WIDER with a letter of reference, which should be emailed (by your supervisor) to the following address: phdreference@wider.unu.edu. The reference letter will be used to verify that you are enrolled in a Ph.D. program at your university.

Selected applicants will be informed of the final decision by email within four weeks of the closing deadline. Applicants selected for the program must confirm their decision to participate within two weeks of being contacted by UNU-WIDER.
